When renting makes sense
A rental car earns its cost when you are travelling with family or luggage, staying outside a city centre, visiting several towns in one trip, or going somewhere with limited public transport — road trips, safari lodges, wine regions and coastal drives are typical cases.
When public transport is better
In dense cities with good metro and rail networks, a car is often slower and dearer than the alternatives once parking, congestion charges and one-way systems are counted. If your trip is mostly inside one city, compare a few days of taxis or transit passes against the rental total plus parking.
Driving licence and documents
Requirements differ by country: some accept your home licence, some ask for an International Driving Permit alongside it, and minimum age or minimum licence-held periods vary by supplier. Confirm the rules for your specific destination and with the rental company before you book, and carry your passport as well.
Deposits and card holds
Most companies place a hold on a credit card in the main driver's name at pickup. Debit cards and cash are often not accepted for the deposit. Check the hold amount and the release time so the funds do not surprise you mid-trip.
Insurance and the excess
Basic cover usually carries an excess — the amount you pay if the car is damaged. You can reduce it with the counter product or with separate excess insurance bought beforehand, which is often cheaper. Understand what is excluded, commonly tyres, glass, undercarriage and roof.
Fuel policies
Full-to-full is usually the fairest: you collect a full tank and return it full. Full-to-empty or pre-purchase policies mean you pay for a whole tank at the supplier's price and rarely get value from what you leave behind. Photograph the fuel gauge at pickup and return.
Automatic versus manual
Manual cars dominate in much of Europe and are cheaper; automatics are the norm in North America and the Gulf. If you only drive automatic, book one specifically rather than relying on availability at the counter, and book earlier as automatic stock runs out first.
Airport pickup
Airport desks are convenient but often carry a premium or airport surcharge, and some are off-site with a shuttle. Check the desk's opening hours against your arrival time — a late flight can leave you locked out of your booking.
Common mistakes to avoid
Underestimating the deposit, ignoring the excess, missing a cross-border restriction, adding extra drivers only at the counter, choosing a car too large for narrow streets and parking, and returning late — charges usually start after a short grace period.
Check these before you drive away
- Walk around the car and photograph or film every existing scratch, dent and wheel
- Check that all damage is written on the rental agreement before you sign
- Confirm the fuel level and the fuel policy in writing
- Test lights, wipers, air conditioning and the spare or repair kit
- Ask which fuel type the car takes
- Confirm the mileage allowance and any cross-border or off-road restrictions
- Note the return location, time and after-hours drop-off procedure
- Keep the rental agreement and the supplier's emergency number with you
