Book Your StayTravel Guidance
What we check with clients before a stay is booked — useful whether you book with us or on your own.
A cheaper hotel far from the city centre often costs more once you add daily taxis or trains. Before comparing rates, decide which two or three places you will visit most, then check the hotel's distance from them on a map. Paying a little more to walk to the areas you came for usually saves both money and time.
Late arrivals on long-haul flights often land at night. Check how far the property is from the airport, whether public transport still runs at that hour, and what an airport transfer costs. A first-night hotel near the airport and a second, better-placed hotel afterwards can work out cheaper and less stressful than one long transfer.
Check what is within walking distance: a metro or train station, a reliable bus stop, or a ride-hailing service that actually operates in that area. In cities where taxis are expensive, staying two minutes from a metro line can matter more than the hotel itself. Confirm whether the nearest line runs on Sundays and late at night if your plans depend on it.
Compare the room-only rate plus what breakfast realistically costs nearby against the inclusive rate. In expensive cities breakfast included can be good value; in places with cheap cafés nearby it is often not. Check whether breakfast is per room or per guest before you assume the family is covered.
If your visa decision is still pending, a refundable rate is usually worth the extra cost — a non-refundable booking you cannot use is a total loss. Note the exact cancellation deadline in your local time and whether you pay now or at the property.
Many cities charge a city or tourist tax per person per night that is collected at the hotel and not shown in the online total. Resort fees, parking, early check-in, late check-out, extra beds and airport shuttles can also be charged separately. Read the property's fine print for anything payable on arrival.
Room sizes vary widely between countries, and a listed double may be two single beds pushed together. If size matters, check the square-metre figure and the bed type rather than the photographs, which are usually taken in the largest room category.
Not every hotel allows three or four people in one room, and child age limits for free stays differ by property. Enter the real number and ages of travellers when you search, so the rates you see are ones the hotel will actually honour at check-in.
Most hotels place a refundable hold on your card at check-in for incidentals. Confirm the amount, whether a credit card is required, and how long the release takes — this matters if you are travelling with a limited card balance.
You will normally need the passport used for the booking and, in many countries, the card used to pay. Some properties require the lead guest to be over a certain age, and a few will not accept third-party payment. Confirm these details if someone else is paying for your stay.
Add transport, breakfast, tourist tax, resort fees and cancellation risk to the nightly rate before comparing options. A hotel that looks slightly more expensive per night is often cheaper across the whole trip once those costs are counted.
Hotel policies, taxes and fees are set by each property and can change. Always read the specific conditions shown at the time of booking.
