For long-haul routes, three to five months ahead usually gives the best combination of fare and seat choice; regional routes settle six to ten weeks out. Fares move with demand rather than on a fixed weekly cycle, so a flexible departure day is worth more than waiting for a supposed cheap booking day. Where a visa is involved, work backwards from the appointment date, not the departure date.
A cheaper itinerary with a long self-transfer connection, an overnight airport wait or two separate tickets is often not cheaper once you count a hotel, a second bag fee and the risk of a missed connection. Two tickets bought separately are two contracts: if the first flight is late, the second airline is not obliged to re-book you.
Basic fares frequently exclude a checked bag, seat selection and any change. Compare the total for the bags you will actually carry, and check the change and cancellation rules before paying — the difference between a semi-flexible and a non-refundable fare is often smaller than the cost of one date change.
A connection under 90 minutes at a large hub is tight once immigration, terminal changes and security are counted. Some countries require a transit visa even when you never leave the airport, and a change of terminal can mean re-clearing security. Where the connection is long, it is often better to route through a hub that suits your passport and your luggage.
Cabin pricing is route-specific, so the right answer changes trip to trip. These are the questions we work through with travellers before comparing options.
Best value on daytime and shorter flights. On overnight long-haul, an aisle seat near the front of a cabin section and a pre-selected meal make more difference than most people expect.
Extra width, recline and baggage rather than a flat bed. Worth comparing when the price sits between economy and business — the gap varies far more by route and airline than by season.
Sensible when you land and go straight into work or a long onward journey. Check whether the aircraft on your specific date has lie-flat seats; the same airline often runs different cabins on the same route.
