"How much is a visa from Nigeria to Canada?" is the question we are asked more than any other about Canada, and the honest answer is that the visa fee is the smallest part of the number. The application itself is modest; biometrics, medicals, document gathering and the funds you must be able to show are what make the trip expensive.
Here is the full 2026 picture for a visitor visa (Temporary Resident Visa) applied for from Nigeria. Fees are set by IRCC in Canadian dollars and charged at the day's exchange rate, so confirm current amounts on the official IRCC site before paying.
The Fees, Line by Line
In Canadian dollars, the fixed government charges for a visitor application are:
- Visitor visa application — CAD $100 per person
- Biometrics — CAD $85 per person, or CAD $170 for a family applying together
- Family application (five or more) — CAD $500 group maximum on the application fee
- Medical examination where required — paid directly to an IRCC-panel physician in Nigeria
- Courier, photographs, bank statement stamping and notarising — local costs
What That Comes To in Naira
At 2026 rates, the application plus biometrics alone works out to roughly ₦200,000 to ₦250,000 per adult, and a realistic all-in figure once medicals, documents, photographs and courier are added is closer to ₦350,000 to ₦450,000 per applicant. None of it is refunded if the visa is refused, which is exactly why the file should be right the first time.
Proof of Funds: The Part That Decides It
IRCC does not publish a fixed figure for visitors, but an officer must be satisfied that you can fund the whole trip and your life while you are there. In practice we advise clients to be able to show clean, well-established funds covering flights, accommodation, daily costs for the full stay and a comfortable margin — and to be able to explain where every large credit came from. A balance that appeared last month reads as borrowed money, and officers say so in refusal letters.
The Document File
- International passport valid beyond the intended stay, plus all previous passports
- Completed online application through the IRCC portal and the fee receipt
- Biometrics instruction letter and appointment at the visa application centre
- Bank statements for six months, stamped, plus salary evidence
- Employment letter stating role, salary and approved leave, or CAC and tax documents if self-employed
- Detailed travel itinerary and accommodation plan
- Invitation letter from a Canadian host where applicable, with their status document and financial evidence
- Proof of ties to Nigeria — property, family responsibilities, ongoing business or employment
- Letter of explanation setting out the purpose of the visit and your return plan
Processing Time
IRCC publishes live processing times per country and they move constantly. From Nigeria, visitor visa decisions have commonly run from several weeks to several months. Apply as early as you can — the portal accepts applications well ahead of travel — and never book paid, non-refundable travel around an estimated decision date.
Why Canadian Visitor Visas Are Refused
Canadian refusal letters use standard checkboxes. The ones Nigerian applicants see most are:
- Purpose of visit not consistent with a temporary stay
- Insufficient personal assets or financial status
- Limited family or economic ties to Nigeria as a home country
- Travel history considered insufficient for the trip proposed
- Employment or income evidence that does not match the bank statements
Improving a Second Attempt
A refusal is not a ban. Request your GCMS notes to see the officer's reasoning, fix the specific weakness — usually funds or ties — and reapply with new evidence rather than the same file. Building travel history first with a shorter trip to a country such as the UAE, Turkey or South Africa also strengthens a later Canadian application.
