How Visa Requirements Actually Work (and How to Check Yours)

Almost every visa problem we see starts the same way: someone checked what a friend or a social media post said, rather than what applies to their own passport. Entry rules are set by the destination country and they vary by nationality, by country of residence, by the purpose of the trip and sometimes by the airline you fly.

This guide explains how the system works, what to check and in what order. It does not promise any outcome — only the relevant embassy, consulate or immigration authority decides an application, and rules change without notice.

Four things decide your requirement

Before you read any requirement list, establish these four facts about your own trip.

  • The passport you will travel on, including any second nationality
  • The country you legally reside in, which can change where and how you apply
  • The purpose of the trip — tourism, business, study, transit and family visits follow different routes
  • Your full itinerary, including any country you merely connect through

Visa-free, authorisation, visa on arrival, visa in advance

Destinations generally fall into one of four categories for any given passport, and the words are often used loosely online.

  • Visa-free: you may enter for a limited period without applying, but you still need onward travel, funds and sometimes accommodation evidence
  • Electronic travel authorisation: a short online application and fee, approved before boarding — not the same as a visa
  • Visa on arrival: issued at the border, usually with conditions on nationality, fee payment and documents
  • Visa in advance: an application, often with an appointment and biometrics, completed before you book anything non-refundable

Transit is a separate question

A connection is not automatically exempt. Some countries require a transit visa even when you never leave the airport, particularly where you must collect and re-check luggage or change terminal.

Check the transit rule for every country on the ticket, not only the final destination. Where a transit visa would be required, routing through a different hub is often cheaper and faster than applying for one.

Passport validity and blank pages

Validity rules are destination-dependent. Many countries ask for a period of validity beyond your return date, and some require a set number of blank pages. Airlines enforce these rules at check-in, which is why people are refused boarding on tickets that were otherwise perfectly valid.

Check your destination's current requirement and count the blank pages yourself before you travel. Renewing a passport takes time that a trip timeline rarely absorbs.

How to check properly, in order

Work through this sequence for every trip, even to a country you have visited before.

  • Read the destination's official immigration or embassy page for your nationality and residence
  • Check your airline's own entry-requirement tool, since it is what check-in staff use
  • Confirm the transit rule for every connecting country
  • Check passport validity and blank pages against the destination requirement
  • Note appointment availability before you fix dates — that is what sets your real timeline

Build the timeline backwards from the appointment

Where a visa is required, the appointment date, not the departure date, controls the plan. Appointment slots can be weeks out in busy seasons, and processing times published by consulates are indicative rather than guaranteed.

Our practical rule is simple: do not pay for anything non-refundable until you understand the appointment and processing position for your destination.

How Bemer Travels helps

We check the current requirement for your specific passport, residence and itinerary, explain the process, prepare the itinerary and booking documents an application usually asks for, and help you sequence the trip so the bookings fit the timeline.

What we do not do is promise an approval. No agency can. The decision belongs to the embassy, consulate or immigration authority, and any service that guarantees a visa should be treated with suspicion.
