Packing for an international trip from Nigeria starts with the route and weather, not the suitcase. A December departure from Lagos can end in a cold European morning; a connection can impose a different cabin-bag limit; and medication accepted at home may be controlled at the destination.
This checklist separates what must stay with you from what can go in the hold, then adds the Nigeria departure checks that are easiest to miss.
Keep these in your cabin bag
Anything needed to board, enter the destination or manage the first day belongs with you, not in checked luggage.
- Passport, visa or travel authorisation and printed itinerary
- Accommodation address and onward or return booking
- Medication in original packaging, plus supporting prescription where appropriate
- Phone, charging cable, compliant power bank and universal adapter
- Payment cards from separate providers and a modest amount of usable currency
- One change of clothing and essential toiletries within security limits
- Travel insurance details and emergency contacts
Pack for the destination, not Lagos weather
Check daytime and evening temperatures for the exact dates. Northern-hemisphere shoulder seasons can feel cold to travellers leaving Nigeria even when local forecasts call the weather mild.
- Use layers: base clothing, warm middle layer and weatherproof outer layer
- Take broken-in walking shoes rather than new footwear
- Pack modest clothing for religious and cultural sites
- Add sun protection for beach, desert and high-altitude trips
- Confirm whether the hotel supplies bulky items such as towels, hair dryers or irons
Match every bag to the fare
The airline's general baggage page may not describe the fare you bought. Read the allowance on the ticket for every operating carrier, especially when the journey combines airlines.
- Weigh checked and cabin bags before leaving home
- Measure cabin luggage where the airline publishes dimensions
- Keep power banks and spare lithium batteries out of checked luggage
- Do not wrap a bag until any inspection or item transfer is complete
- Photograph the packed contents and keep the baggage receipt
Plan medication and food carefully
Destination rules can restrict medicines, herbal products and foods that are ordinary in Nigeria. Check official customs and health guidance before packing. Carry enough prescribed medication for the trip, but do not remove identifying labels.
For temperature-sensitive medicine, confirm airline handling and storage arrangements before travel rather than relying on airport staff to improvise.
Money and phone access
Tell your bank about the trip if required and confirm card foreign-transaction charges. Keep a backup card separate from the main wallet. Avoid carrying the entire spending budget in cash.
Arrange roaming or an eSIM only after checking phone compatibility and destination rules. Save tickets, hotel details and important numbers offline in case airport Wi-Fi fails.
The night-before Nigeria departure check
Reconfirm the operating terminal and airline check-in guidance. Lagos and Abuja road conditions can make a late departure from home risky, so build a realistic airport buffer.
- Complete online check-in where available
- Check the flight status with the operating airline
- Recheck passport, entry document and transit permissions
- Confirm airport transport and terminal
- Put prohibited liquids and sharp items in the correct bag
- Charge devices and download confirmations for offline access
One final rule
Leave space. A tightly packed bag is harder to secure, more likely to exceed the return allowance and gives no room for weather changes or purchases. The best packing list is the one that supports the itinerary without making every transfer difficult.
