Most trip problems are not bad luck. They repeat, which means they can be designed out. These ten habits come from the issues travellers actually bring to us after a trip has gone wrong.
1. Treat two separate tickets as two separate trips
If the first flight is late, the second airline has no obligation to re-book you. Either book a single through-ticket or leave enough time — several hours, plus an overnight if the gap is tight — between separate bookings.
2. Check the connection, not just the total journey time
A 60-minute connection at a large hub can mean a terminal change, a second security screening and a long walk. Under 90 minutes at a major airport is tight, and it gets tighter if the arrival is into a different terminal.
3. Confirm entry requirements a second time before you fly
Rules change between booking and departure. Re-check the destination requirement and your passport validity around two weeks out, while there is still time to act.
4. Tell your bank you are travelling
Unexpected foreign transactions are a common reason cards are blocked. Notify your provider, carry cards from two different issuers and keep some local currency for transport on arrival.
5. Photograph your documents and your luggage
Keep photographs of your passport, visa, insurance and booking references in two places — your phone and an email to yourself. Photograph your packed bag and the tag receipt; it makes a delayed-baggage claim much simpler.
6. Check in online, but arrive as though you had not
Online check-in secures your seat, not your place in the bag-drop queue. For international departures, plan on three hours at busy airports, and more in peak season.
7. Keep the first 24 hours in your hand luggage
Medication, a change of clothes, chargers and any documents needed on arrival belong in the cabin. A delayed bag then becomes an inconvenience rather than a crisis.
8. Read the fare rules before you compare prices
Baggage, seat selection, date changes and cancellation terms change the real price considerably. A fare that looks cheaper often is not once you add the bag you were always going to carry.
9. Book the airport transfer before you land
Late arrivals, unfamiliar airports and large groups are the three situations where a pre-arranged transfer pays for itself. Give the flight number and confirm the meeting point in writing.
10. Leave one flexible day in the itinerary
Weather, strikes, a closure or simple tiredness will move something. One unscheduled day keeps the rest of the plan intact instead of collapsing it.
If you would rather not manage all of this yourself, that is what a consultant is for — we check routing, fare rules, documents and timings before anything is confirmed.
