Schengen Visa From Nigeria (2026): Which Embassy, What It Costs, How Long It Takes

A Schengen visa lets you travel through 29 European countries on one sticker. For Nigerian applicants the difficulty is rarely the trip itself — it is choosing the correct embassy, getting an appointment at all, and building a file that answers the two questions every consulate asks: can you fund this trip, and will you come back?

This is the process as we run it for clients in 2026. Confirm the requirement list and fee on the official visa-centre page for your destination country before you submit; consulates change details frequently.

Step 1: Apply to the Right Country

Applying to the wrong consulate gets a file rejected before anyone reads it. The rule has two parts.

  • Main destination rule — apply to the country where you will spend the most nights
  • First entry rule — if the nights are split evenly, apply to the country you land in first
  • A transit through a Schengen airport does not make that country your destination
  • Your itinerary, hotel bookings and flights must all agree with the country you chose

Step 2: The Appointment Is the Bottleneck

In Lagos and Abuja, appointment slots for popular consulates — Italy, France, Spain, Germany, the Netherlands — are the scarcest part of the whole process. Slots for the summer travel season are typically taken months ahead. Start looking as soon as your dates firm up, and plan on applying up to six months before travel, which is the earliest most consulates accept an application. Fifteen working days before departure is the absolute minimum; it is not a realistic target from Nigeria.

Step 3: What It Costs

The Schengen visa fee is set in euros — €90 for adults, €45 for children aged six to eleven, free under six — and is charged in naira at the consulate's rate. Add the visa-centre service charge, biometrics, travel insurance, courier and photographs. Most adult applicants from Nigeria should budget a total in the region of ₦250,000 to ₦350,000 before flights and hotels. The visa fee is not refunded if the application is refused.

Step 4: The Documents That Decide It

Every consulate publishes its own checklist, but the file that succeeds always covers the same five areas.

  • Identity — passport valid three months beyond your return with two blank pages, plus old passports
  • The form — completed, signed and matching every supporting document exactly
  • Funds — three to six months of stamped bank statements showing regular income, not a one-off deposit; sponsors must add their own statements and a letter
  • Purpose — round-trip flight reservation, hotel bookings for every night, and a day-by-day itinerary
  • Ties to Nigeria — employment letter with approved leave dates, payslips, CAC documents for business owners, property or family evidence
  • Travel insurance covering at least €30,000 in medical costs, valid across the whole Schengen area for the full trip

Step 5: Decision Times

The standard decision window is 15 calendar days, extendable to 45 where a consulate needs additional checks. From Nigeria, three to six weeks is the honest planning range for the busy season. Do not pay for non-refundable tickets or hotels until the passport is back with the visa in it — reservations are what the file needs, not purchases.

Why Nigerian Applications Get Refused

  • Insufficient or unexplained funds — the single most common refusal reason
  • Itinerary that does not match the bookings or the dates on the form
  • Weak evidence of ties to Nigeria, especially for young single applicants without stable employment
  • Insurance that does not cover the full period or falls below the €30,000 medical minimum
  • Applying to the wrong consulate for the itinerary submitted

If You Are Refused

You receive a refusal letter with a coded reason. Read it carefully — you can appeal within the deadline stated, or reapply with the specific gap fixed. Reapplying with the identical file almost always produces the identical answer.

How We Support Schengen Applications

We provide visa assistance for Schengen applications from Nigeria: choosing the correct consulate for your itinerary, building the document file, issuing the flight itinerary and hotel confirmations the application requires, and arranging compliant travel insurance. The consulate alone decides the outcome — what we do is make sure nothing in the file gives them a reason to say no.
