Before You Book

Nigerian passport holders need a visa for South Africa, and applications are made through the accredited application centre with an appointment. Prepare bank statements, employment evidence, flight and hotel reservations and proof of ties to Nigeria, and allow several weeks for a decision before buying non-refundable tickets.

When to Go

South Africa's seasons are the reverse of the northern hemisphere, which is part of the appeal.

  • November to March: warm Cape Town summer, beaches and wine country at their best
  • May to September: cooler, cheaper, and the strongest season for safari game viewing
  • June to August: whale watching along the Western Cape coast
  • Book well ahead for the December period, when domestic demand peaks

Cape Town or Johannesburg?

Cape Town is the scenery trip: Table Mountain, the Cape Peninsula drive, Boulders Beach penguins and the Winelands within easy reach. Johannesburg is the city and history trip, with Soweto, the Apartheid Museum and quick access to Kruger-area safari lodges and Sun City.

A week is comfortable for one base. Ten days lets you combine both cities with an internal flight between them.

Costs and Money

South Africa generally offers strong value compared with Europe for the same standard of hotel and dining. Cards are widely accepted in cities, but carry some rand for markets, tips and township tours.

  • Budget separately for internal flights between Johannesburg and Cape Town
  • Pre-book safari lodges and popular tours — walk-up availability is limited
  • Metered taxis and ride-hailing apps are the norm for city transfers
  • Travel insurance with medical cover is strongly recommended

Staying Safe and Comfortable

Use the same city sense you would in Lagos: keep valuables out of sight, use arranged transfers at night, and stick to recommended neighbourhoods and guided tours in unfamiliar areas. Most visitors have a completely trouble-free trip.

A Sample Seven-Day Itinerary

A straightforward first-time route that avoids rushing.

  • Day 1: Arrive Cape Town, settle in, sunset at the V&A Waterfront

  • Day 4: Winelands day trip to Stellenbosch and Franschhoek
  • Day 5: Fly to Johannesburg, Apartheid Museum
