The easiest long-haul trip from Lagos — if you time it right

Dubai is the destination we book most often, and the reason is practical: flying time from Lagos is manageable, the tourist infrastructure is built for first-time visitors, and the visa route is generally faster than a Schengen or UK application.

The two things that decide whether a Dubai trip works are the month you travel and the area you stay in. Get those right and almost everything else is easy.

Why visit Dubai

A dense concentration of built attractions — Burj Khalifa, Dubai Mall, Palm Jumeirah, Dubai Frame, Museum of the Future — all within a short drive.
Genuine desert experiences within 45 minutes of the city centre.
Beach resorts and city hotels in the same trip without changing country.
Shopping at every level, from gold and spice souks to the malls.
Efficient, safe and easy to navigate for first-time international travellers.

Best time to visit Dubai

November to March is the comfortable season

Winter (November – March): Daytime 24-30°C, low humidity, everything outdoors is enjoyable. Peak prices, especially late December to early January.
Shoulder (April & October): Hot but bearable, roughly 32-38°C. Better rates and quieter attractions. Our value pick.
Summer (May – September): Regularly 40-45°C with high humidity. Outdoor activity is limited to early morning and night, but hotel rates fall dramatically and everything indoors is heavily air-conditioned.

Summer Dubai is a genuine option for a mall-and-resort trip on a budget, provided you accept that daytime sightseeing is not realistic.

Main attractions in Dubai

Burj Khalifa – At the Top: Book a sunset slot online well ahead; it is the one that sells out. Level 124/125 is enough for most people; 148 is a large premium.
Dubai Mall & Dubai Fountain: Fountain shows run every 30 minutes in the evening and are free. The mall also holds the aquarium and ice rink.
Desert safari: Dune drive, camel ride and a camp dinner. Choose an operator with proper vehicle safety standards; motion sickness is common on the dune-bashing section.
Palm Jumeirah & The View at the Palm: The observation deck gives you the Palm's shape, which you cannot see from ground level.
Old Dubai: Al Fahidi, Gold Souk, Spice Souk: Cross Dubai Creek on an abra water taxi for a token fare. The most characterful part of the city and the part most visitors skip.
Museum of the Future: Timed entry, sells out days ahead. Striking building and a genuinely well-made experience.
Dubai Marina & JBR: Beach, promenade dining and yacht cruises. The most walkable evening area in the new city.
Abu Dhabi day trip: Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and Louvre Abu Dhabi, about 90 minutes each way. Strict dress code at the mosque.

Where to stay in Dubai

Downtown Dubai: Burj Khalifa and Dubai Mall on your doorstep. Best for first-time sightseeing, no beach.
Dubai Marina / JBR: Our usual all-round recommendation: beach, restaurants, walkable at night, metro access.
Palm Jumeirah: Resort trips and honeymoons. Beautiful, but you will need taxis for everything and traffic on and off the Palm can be slow.
Deira & Bur Dubai: Cheapest by a distance and closest to the souks and creek. Older, busier, less polished.
Business Bay: Good value next to Downtown, lots of newer apartment-style hotels, handy for longer stays.

Getting around and airport transfers

The metro Red and Green lines cover Downtown, Marina, Deira and the airport, and are cheap and clean. Buy a Nol card at any station.
Taxis are metered, plentiful and reasonably priced. Ride-hailing apps also operate.
The metro does not reach the Palm or most beach resorts — factor taxi costs into a Palm stay.
Dubai International (DXB) is close to the city; Al Maktoum (DWC) is much further out. Check which one budget fares use.
Renting a car is straightforward and roads are excellent, but Salik tolls, parking zones and aggressive traffic mean most short-trip visitors do better with taxis and the metro.

Choosing a hotel

'Beach access' can mean a shuttle to a public beach rather than a private stretch. Confirm what is meant.
A tourism dirham fee is charged per room per night at checkout, on top of the booking rate.
Apartment hotels in Business Bay and Marina are excellent value for families and longer stays.
Ask whether alcohol is served if that matters to you — some hotels are dry, some are not, and it is rarely stated clearly.
December and January rates can be double the October price for the same room. Shifting a trip by three weeks is often the biggest saving available.

Tours and activities worth booking

Pre-book the Burj Khalifa and Museum of the Future. Both regularly sell out.
For the desert safari, the cheapest operators cut corners on vehicles and camp quality. This is one to pay a little more for.
Combine the old city on foot with an abra crossing rather than taking a bus tour of Deira.
Abu Dhabi works well as an organised day tour because the driving and mosque timing are handled for you.

Nigerian passport holders need a UAE tourist visa arranged before travel

Nigerian passport holders require a visa for the UAE, arranged in advance rather than on arrival. Applications are typically submitted through an airline, hotel or approved agency sponsor, and supporting requirements have tightened in recent years — commonly including proof of funds, confirmed accommodation and a return ticket.

Families, couples and solo travellers

First-time visitors: Four to five nights. Downtown or Marina, one desert safari, one old-Dubai day, one beach day.
Families: Marina or JBR for the beach and walkability. Aquaventure, Legoland and IMG Worlds fill days easily; avoid summer with young children.
Couples: Palm Jumeirah or a Marina resort, a sunset Burj Khalifa slot, a dhow or yacht dinner cruise.
Shopping trips: Deira for gold and textiles, Dubai Mall and Mall of the Emirates for brands. The Dubai Shopping Festival period (roughly December to January) has the deepest discounts and the biggest crowds.

Tips for first-time visitors to Dubai

Dress modestly in malls, souks and public areas — shoulders and knees covered. Beachwear belongs at the beach and pool only.
Public displays of affection and drinking alcohol outside licensed venues are treated seriously.
Friday has a different rhythm; some venues open later.
Tap water is treated and safe, though most people drink bottled.
Taxis have a minimum fare; short hops cost more than you would expect.
During Ramadan, eating and drinking in public during daylight is restricted. Hotels make arrangements for guests, but plan around it.

Common mistakes to avoid

Booking July or August without realising outdoor sightseeing is effectively off the table.
Staying on the Palm for a sightseeing-heavy trip and spending the budget on taxis.
Skipping old Dubai. The creek and souks are the most memorable part for many visitors.
Turning up at the Burj Khalifa hoping for a sunset ticket on the day.
Assuming a UAE visa is quick because it once was — the requirements for Nigerian applicants have tightened.

What things typically cost

Mid-range hotel, per night: About $110-$220 in winter, considerably less in summer.
Metro & taxis, per day: $10-$30 depending on how far out you stay.
Casual meal: $8-$20 per person outside hotels; hotel restaurants cost substantially more.
Burj Khalifa (levels 124/125): Roughly $40-$70 depending on time slot.

How many days do I need in Dubai?

Four to five nights covers the main attractions with a beach day. Seven if you want Abu Dhabi and a slower pace.

Is Dubai expensive?

It can be, but it scales. Deira hotels, metro travel and local restaurants make a genuinely affordable trip; the Palm and hotel dining do not.

What should women wear?

Normal modest clothing is fine — covered shoulders and knees in public areas. Dubai is far more relaxed than some neighbouring emirates, but the mosque in Abu Dhabi enforces a strict code.

Is Dubai good for a first international trip?

Yes. It is safe, easy to navigate, English is widely spoken, and the flight from Lagos is short compared with Europe or North America.
