Choose the Right Bag
Most international airlines allow a carry-on around 7 to 10kg with dimensions close to 55x40x20cm, though budget carriers in Europe and Asia are stricter, so check your specific airline before you buy a bag. A soft-sided bag with a front pocket for documents makes airport queues far less stressful than digging through a hard-shell case.
Pack Using the Layering Method
Roll rather than fold your clothes to save space and reduce creasing. Heavier items like shoes and toiletry bags go at the bottom near the wheels, with lighter items like t-shirts and underwear layered on top.
Use packing cubes to separate categories: one for tops, one for bottoms, one for underwear and socks. This turns a jumbled bag into something you can navigate in seconds at security or during a quick outfit change.
- 3-4 tops that mix and match with every bottom
- 2 versatile bottoms (one trouser, one pair of jeans or a skirt)
- 1 light jacket worn on the plane to save space
- Underwear and socks for the full trip, plus 2 spares
- A pair of comfortable walking shoes worn while travelling
- Compact toiletries in a clear 1-litre bag for security screening
Handle Liquids and Electronics Correctly
Most airports enforce the 100ml liquid rule in a single clear resealable bag. Decant your favourite shea butter cream or perfume into small travel bottles rather than checking a bag just for full-size toiletries.
Keep your phone charger, power bank, and any laptop easily accessible, since they usually need to be removed separately at security checks.
What Nigerian Travellers Often Forget
It is easy to overpack food items or forget climate differences. If you are heading somewhere cold like London in January, one proper coat is worth more than three light jackets. If you are travelling to a Gulf country during Ramadan, pack slightly more modest clothing for daytime outings.
- A universal power adapter, since UK, EU, and US plugs all differ
- A printed copy of your hotel address in the local language if possible
- A small first-aid kit with paracetamol and rehydration salts
- A reusable water bottle to fill after airport security
Final Weigh-In Before You Leave Home
Always weigh your finished carry-on at home using a kitchen or luggage scale. It is far better to remove one jumper in your bedroom than to be forced to wear three layers awkwardly at the check-in counter because your bag is 2kg over the limit.
