Get Your Documents in Order Early

Nothing ruins a first trip abroad faster than document trouble at the airport. Start at least six weeks before your travel date, especially if you still need to apply for a visa. Your Nigerian international passport should have at least six months validity from your travel date, and at least two blank pages for stamps.

If your destination requires a visa, remember that approval is always at the discretion of the embassy or consulate, no matter how complete your documents look. Apply early, be honest on your forms, and keep copies of everything you submit.

Sort Your Foreign Exchange Before You Travel

Do not wait until you get to the airport to think about forex. Nigerian banks now allow you to load a small amount of dollars onto a domiciliary account or travel card, and platforms like Flutterwave and dedicated FX apps can help you plan ahead. Carry a mix of a little cash and a prepaid or debit card that works internationally.

It also helps to inform your bank that you will be travelling so your card is not blocked for suspicious activity the moment you swipe it abroad.

Pack Smart, Not Heavy

Most international economy tickets from Lagos or Abuja allow one checked bag around 23kg plus a carry-on. Weigh your bag at home with a luggage scale to avoid excess baggage fees, which can run from $50 to over $200 depending on the airline.

Pack a small day bag with essentials in case your checked luggage is delayed, which happens more often on connecting itineraries through hubs like Doha, Istanbul, or Addis Ababa.

Know the Airport Process

Settle In on the Plane

Once onboard, use the flight to rest rather than binge on films if you have a long journey ahead with a tight connection. Drink water often since cabin air is dry, and set your watch to your destination's time zone as soon as you board to help your body adjust faster.
