Nigerian Travel Documents Checklist: What You Need Before Travelling

Most travel problems that start at the airport begin with a document — a passport too close to expiry, a visa that does not match the purpose of travel, or a missing vaccination card. This checklist covers what Nigerian travellers are commonly asked for, and what to check before you leave home.

Documents most Nigerian travellers need

Work through these in order — the earlier items take the longest to sort out.

01International passport

Your Nigerian international passport is the one document nothing else works without. Check the expiry date early — renewals take time and a passport that is close to expiry can stop you at check-in.

Most destinations ask for at least six months' validity beyond your return date
Keep two or more blank pages free for visas and entry stamps
Carry previous passports if a visa application asks for your travel history
Photograph the data page and keep a copy separate from the passport itself

02Visa or approved e-visa

Most destinations require a visa for Nigerian passport holders, obtained before travel. A few operate e-visas or visa-on-arrival schemes, but these have their own conditions and are not automatic.

Print the approval letter or e-visa; do not rely on a phone screenshot alone

03Passport photographs

Visa applications and some arrival forms need recent photographs to a specific standard. Sizes and background colours differ between embassies, so check the published specification rather than reusing old prints.

Recent — normally taken within the last six months
Plain background, no glasses, neutral expression unless stated otherwise
Bring spares; a rejected photo can cost you an appointment slot

04Flight booking or reservation

Airlines and immigration officers regularly ask for a return or onward ticket, and most visa applications require a flight itinerary. A confirmed reservation shows your dates line up with what you stated on the form.

05Hotel or accommodation documents

You will usually be asked where you are staying. That means a hotel confirmation for the full stay, or an invitation letter and host details if you are staying with family or friends.

06Travel insurance

Some destinations require travel insurance as a condition of the visa — Schengen countries are the best-known example — and it is sensible everywhere else. Check the minimum medical cover your destination specifies.

Carry the policy document and the emergency assistance number

07Proof of funds

Where required, this is usually bank statements covering three to six months, stamped by your bank. The point is to show that your trip is affordable and your finances are consistent, not simply that a large balance exists.

08Yellow fever vaccination certificate

Nigeria is a yellow fever endemic country, so several destinations require a valid yellow fever certificate from travellers arriving from Nigeria. Where it applies, the certificate becomes valid ten days after vaccination.

Destination-specific requirements

Beyond the core list, individual countries add their own conditions — arrival or health declaration forms, biometric appointments, police clearance for longer stays, or minimum insurance values. Some require you to register your address after arrival.

Travelling with children

Where a child travels with one parent or with another adult, many countries expect a birth certificate and a signed consent letter from the non-travelling parent or guardian. Airlines can ask for these at check-in.

Documents worth carrying anyway

A printed itinerary, emergency contacts, a copy of your insurance policy, your driving licence or international driving permit if you plan to drive, and photocopies of everything stored separately from the originals.
