Accra travel guide
Atlantic coast, history and one of West Africa's best food and music scenes
Written and last reviewed by the Bemer Travels team on 19 September 2026
Accra is straightforward to visit and rewards a relaxed pace. The city itself gives you markets, museums, beaches and a genuinely good restaurant and live-music scene, while the country's best-known historical sites sit a few hours along the coast.
The two planning decisions that matter are traffic and distance. Crossing Accra in the late afternoon is slow, and the Cape Coast castles are a long day trip from the capital — most travellers enjoy it far more as an overnight.
Why visit Accra
- Cape Coast and Elmina castles are among West Africa's most significant historical sites.
- Accra has an active live-music, gallery and independent-restaurant scene.
- Coastal beaches and fishing towns are within easy reach of the city.
- Kakum National Park offers a rainforest canopy walkway on the same route as the castles.
- It is a practical, well-connected regional hub with short flights across West Africa.
Best time to visit Accra
November to March is the driest and easiest period
- Dry season (November – March)
- Warm, drier days that suit beaches, road travel and outdoor events. December is the busiest month for events and returning diaspora travellers.
- Main rains (April – June)
- Heavy rainfall at times; road travel slows and coastal excursions can be disrupted.
- Cooler months (July – August)
- Less rain than the main season and slightly cooler; a reasonable time to travel.
- Short rains (September – October)
- Intermittent rain with quieter attractions and lower hotel demand.
The harmattan, roughly December to February, can bring dusty haze that affects photography and, occasionally, flights.
Main attractions in Accra
- Cape Coast and Elmina castles
- UNESCO-listed forts central to the history of the transatlantic slave trade. Guided visits are essential for context and are emotionally heavy.
- Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park
- Mausoleum and museum dedicated to Ghana's first president, in central Accra.
- Makola Market
- Large, busy central market. Best visited in the morning and with a guide if it is your first time.
- Jamestown
- Historic fishing quarter with the lighthouse, street art and a strong photographic character; local guides are recommended.
- Kakum National Park
- Rainforest canopy walkway near Cape Coast; usually combined with the castles over two days.
- Labadi and coastal beaches
- Popular managed beaches with entry fees; quieter options lie further east and west of the city.
- Art and music venues
- Galleries, craft markets and live highlife and Afrobeats venues, busiest at the weekend.
Where to stay in Accra
- Airport Residential
- Close to the airport, with good hotels and restaurants and easier access in and out of the city.
- Osu
- Central, walkable and lively for restaurants and nightlife; busier and noisier at weekends.
- Cantonments / Labone
- Quiet residential areas with guesthouses and good dining, well placed for the city centre.
- Beachfront east of the city
- Resort-style stays with a slower pace; allow real travel time to central Accra.
Getting around and airport transfers
- Ride-hailing apps are widely used, inexpensive and the simplest option for visitors.
- Traffic builds heavily in the late afternoon; schedule airport runs and meetings around it.
- Shared minibuses (tro-tros) are cheap and local but not practical for a first visit with luggage.
- For Cape Coast, a hired car with a driver or an organised tour is far more comfortable than public transport.
- Internal flights and good coastal roads make two-centre trips practical.
Need a vehicle at the other end? Our car rental page explains how driver requirements, deposits and insurance excesses usually work abroad.
Choosing a hotel
- Ask about backup power and water arrangements; established hotels normally have generators.
- Check whether airport transfers are included, particularly for late-night arrivals.
- Air conditioning, insect screens and mosquito precautions are worth confirming before booking.
- December rates and availability tighten significantly around the festive event season.

Tours and activities worth booking
- Take a guide at the castles. The guiding is the substance of the visit, not an add-on.
- Jamestown and market walks are much better with a local guide who can introduce you properly.
- Combine Kakum with the castles over two days rather than compressing both into one long day trip.
- Food and music tours are a good introduction early in a trip and usually run in the evening.

Visa information for Ghana
Entry requirements for Ghana depend on your passport and residence
Most visitors need a visa or an electronic authorisation arranged before travel, while some regional passport holders enter under ECOWAS arrangements. What applies depends on your nationality, residence and purpose of travel.
Applications commonly require a passport valid for the required period, photographs, accommodation and return travel details and proof of funds. Health entry requirements, including yellow fever vaccination certificates, apply to many travellers — check the current rule before you fly.
Bemer Travels can explain the current process for your circumstances and prepare supporting booking documents. Only the Ghanaian authorities decide an application.
