Toronto travel guide
Canada's most international city, and the easiest base for Niagara
Written and last reviewed by the Bemer Travels team on 19 September 2026
Toronto is the city most first-time visitors to Canada land in, and it earns the stay: the downtown core is compact, transit is straightforward, and the neighbourhoods are genuinely distinct.
The two things to plan around are the season β winter is long and cold β and Niagara, which is a day trip rather than a detour.
Why visit Toronto
- One of the most multicultural cities in the world, which shows most clearly in the food.
- The CN Tower, Royal Ontario Museum, Art Gallery of Ontario and Distillery District in one downtown.
- Niagara Falls and the Niagara-on-the-Lake wine region about 90 minutes away.
- Toronto Islands give you a skyline view and a beach 15 minutes by ferry.
- Major league sport, theatre and festivals almost year-round.
Best time to visit Toronto
May to October, with September and early October the best balance
- Spring (April β May)
- 8-18Β°C, patios reopen, prices still moderate.
- Summer (June β August)
- 24-30Β°C and humid, festival season, busiest and priciest.
- Autumn (September β October)
- Our pick β mild days, autumn colour in Ontario, easier hotel rates.
- Winter (November β March)
- Regularly below freezing with snow. Indoor city, cheapest rates, and the PATH underground network keeps downtown usable.
Winter visitors should plan indoor-led days and pack properly β a light coat is not enough in January.
Main attractions in Toronto
- CN Tower
- Book a timed slot; the glass floor and EdgeWalk are separate add-ons. Sunset slots go first.
- Royal Ontario Museum
- Natural history and world cultures under one roof. Half a day, more with children.
- Art Gallery of Ontario
- Strong Canadian and Indigenous collections in a Frank Gehry building.
- Distillery District
- Restored Victorian industrial lanes, galleries and restaurants; a Christmas market in December.
- Toronto Islands
- Short ferry to beaches, bike paths and the best skyline view. Check ferry timings, especially off-season.
- St Lawrence Market
- Long-running food market, best in the morning and closed on Mondays.
- Niagara Falls
- Day trip by tour, train or car. Add Niagara-on-the-Lake for wineries if you have the time.
Where to stay in Toronto
- Downtown / Entertainment District
- Walk to the CN Tower, theatres and the lake. Best for a short first visit.
- Yorkville
- Upmarket, quieter, next to the ROM and good shopping.
- Queen West
- Independent shops, galleries and music; more character, slightly further out.
- Harbourfront
- Lake views and the island ferry, calm in the evening.
- Midtown
- Better value, residential, 15-20 minutes downtown on the subway.
Getting around and airport transfers
- The TTC subway, streetcars and buses cover the city; a rechargeable Presto card or contactless tap works on all of them.
- The UP Express train runs from Pearson airport to Union Station in about 25 minutes.
- Downtown is walkable, and the PATH underground network links much of it in winter.
- Ride-hailing is widely available; downtown parking is expensive, so a car is only worth it for regional trips.
- For Niagara, a tour or the GO train plus bus is simpler than driving if you are not used to Ontario highways.
Need a vehicle at the other end? Our car rental page explains how driver requirements, deposits and insurance excesses usually work abroad.
Choosing a hotel
- Rates spike during major conventions, film festivals and playoff runs β check dates before committing.
- Quoted prices usually exclude taxes and a municipal accommodation levy added at checkout.
- Downtown parking is often a nightly charge on top of the room rate.
- Older 'boutique' conversions can have very small rooms; check the stated square footage.

Tours and activities worth booking
- Niagara day tours that include the boat ride and a winery stop save a lot of connection planning.
- A food-focused walk in Kensington Market or St Lawrence is the fastest way into the city's strongest asset.
- Book the CN Tower and any hockey, basketball or baseball tickets in advance during season.
- In autumn, guided Ontario colour trips north of the city are worth a full day.

Visa information for Canada
Canada requires either an eTA or a visitor visa, depending on your nationality
Most visitors need either an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) for visa-exempt nationalities flying to Canada, or a temporary resident (visitor) visa applied for in advance. Which one applies depends on your passport and your country of residence.
Visitor visa applications are submitted online with biometrics at a visa application centre, and typically require travel history, proof of funds, employment or business documents, a clear purpose of travel and evidence of ties to your home country.
Bemer Travels prepares the itinerary, accommodation confirmations and supporting documentation and guides you through the process. The decision is made by Canadian immigration authorities and cannot be guaranteed.
Families, couples and solo travellers
- First-time visitors
- Four nights downtown: city and CN Tower, museums, islands and Distillery, Niagara day trip.
- Families
- Harbourfront or downtown, Ripley's Aquarium, the islands, ROM and a Blue Jays game in season.
- Couples
- Yorkville base, an evening in the Distillery District and a Niagara-on-the-Lake wine day.
- Longer Canada trips
- Toronto as the entry point, then Ottawa and Montreal by train or the Rockies by connecting flight.
Tips for first-time visitors to Toronto
- Prices on tags exclude sales tax, which is added at the till.
- Tipping is expected in restaurants and taxis, commonly 15-20%.
- Winter wind off the lake makes it feel far colder than the temperature suggests.
- Alcohol is sold through licensed outlets rather than ordinary supermarkets.
- Distances are bigger than they look on a map β the subway saves more time than you expect.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Treating Niagara as an afternoon add-on rather than a full day.
- Visiting in January with summer clothing and outdoor plans.
- Renting a car for a downtown-only stay and paying for parking every night.
- Missing that St Lawrence Market is closed on Mondays.
- Booking flights into Pearson without checking the transfer time into the city at rush hour.
What things typically cost
- Mid-range hotel, per night
- Roughly CAD 200-350 in summer, less in winter.
- Transit day pass
- Around CAD 13-14, or pay per ride with contactless.
- Casual dinner
- CAD 25-45 per person before tax and tip.
- CN Tower entry
- From about CAD 45 for a timed general admission ticket.
