How to plan tours and activities in Lagos

Lagos rewards visitors who plan around traffic rather than distance. Two places five kilometres apart can be twenty minutes or two hours apart depending on the hour, the bridge and the day of the week, so a realistic day here contains fewer stops than the map suggests.

Most first-time visitors split their time between the islands — Victoria Island, Ikoyi and Lekki, where most hotels, galleries and restaurants sit — and a guided visit to the mainland for markets, music and history. Going with someone who knows the routes changes the experience more here than in almost any other city we book.

When to go

November to March is drier and more comfortable for walking tours and beach days. The heaviest rains fall between June and September, when outdoor plans need a flexible backup. December is lively but also the busiest and most expensive month, with events filling hotels weeks ahead.

Practical tips before you book

Book morning starts

Tours that begin by 8am cover far more ground. Afternoon departures from the islands towards the mainland routinely lose an hour or more to traffic on the bridges.

Group by area, not by interest

Put beach and island activities on one day and mainland markets, museums and music on another. Crossing back and forth wastes the day.

Carry small cash and a card

Card payments are common in hotels and larger restaurants, while boat fares, market stalls and tips are easier in small notes.

Use a driver or a vetted transfer

Self-driving in Lagos is not recommended for visitors. A driver who knows the routes is a practical necessity rather than a luxury.

Mistakes we see most often

Planning four or five separate stops across the islands and mainland in one day.
Arriving at a beach or boat jetty without confirming the return crossing time.
Assuming every venue accepts cards, especially at markets and small jetties.
Booking a late-afternoon airport transfer during a weekday rush.
