How to plan tours and activities in Cape Town

Cape Town is weather-led. Table Mountain, Cape Point and boat trips all depend on wind and cloud, so the trips that work best keep one or two flexible days and take the mountain on the first clear morning rather than on a fixed date.

Distances are larger than they look. The peninsula drive, the winelands and the city centre are separate days, and a hired car or a driver makes the trip considerably easier.

When to go

November to March is warm and dry and best for beaches and the peninsula, though the wind can be strong. April, May, September and October are quieter with good hiking conditions. Winter, June to August, is cooler and wetter with lower rates and fewer visitors.

Practical tips before you book

Take the mountain on the first clear day

The cableway closes in high wind. Booking a fixed date in advance risks losing it entirely.

Treat the peninsula as a full day

Chapman's Peak, Boulders Beach and Cape Point together fill a day comfortably with stops.

Plan winelands with a driver

Tastings and driving do not mix. A tour or hired driver is the practical way to visit Stellenbosch or Franschhoek.

Dress in layers

Coastal weather changes quickly and the summit is much cooler and windier than the city below.
