How to plan tours and activities in Paris

Paris is small enough to walk and dense enough to overwhelm. The most enjoyable trips pick two or three arrondissements a day and accept that the queue-free version of the city exists mainly early in the morning and late in the evening.

Booking matters more here than in most European capitals. The major museums and monuments use timed entry, and the difference between a reserved slot and a walk-up on a summer afternoon can be two hours of standing.

When to go

April to June and September to October give mild weather and long evenings. July and August are hot and crowded, and some independent restaurants close for the summer. Winter is quiet and atmospheric, with shorter daylight and better hotel rates.

Practical tips before you book

Reserve the Louvre and the tower

Both run on timed slots. An early slot at the Louvre or a late one at the Eiffel Tower is noticeably calmer than the middle of the day.

Walk between the big sights

The Seine-side walk from the Louvre to Notre-Dame or on to the Latin Quarter is short and is a large part of the pleasure of the city.

Eat away from the monuments

Restaurants one or two streets back from a major sight are usually better and cheaper than those facing it.

Plan day trips as full days

Versailles or Giverny takes most of a day once travel and queues are counted. Do not add an evening tour to the same date.
