Few cities compress this much geography: Table Mountain sits in the middle, two oceans meet nearby, and the winelands are a 45-minute drive inland. It is also a city with a difficult history that its best museums and tours address directly rather than avoiding.

Two practical points shape a Cape Town trip. First, the seasons are reversed from the northern hemisphere. Second, you will want a car — the distances between the mountain, the peninsula and the winelands are real.

Best time to visit Cape Town

October to April is the dry, warm season; December and January are peak

Summer (December – February): Warm, dry and long-dayed, but the busiest and most expensive. The south-easterly wind can be relentless.
Autumn (March – April): Our top pick: warm, calmer winds, harvest season in the winelands, lower rates than December.
Winter (May – August): Cool and wet with dramatic seas. Cheapest by a wide margin, best whale watching from Hermanus around July to November.
Spring (September – November): Wildflowers, whale season and rising temperatures. Excellent value before the December surge.

Table Mountain's cableway closes in high wind, which happens often. Build flexibility into your plans and go up on the first clear, calm morning.

Main attractions in Cape Town

Table Mountain: Book cableway tickets online for the earliest slot. Check the wind forecast — closures are common and unpredictable.
Cape Point & Cape of Good Hope: Inside Table Mountain National Park at the peninsula's tip. Combine with Chapman's Peak Drive.
Boulders Beach, Simon's Town: An African penguin colony with boardwalks. Go early; the car park fills by mid-morning.
Robben Island: Ferry from the V&A Waterfront, guided by former political prisoners. Book well ahead; sailings are cancelled in rough seas.
V&A Waterfront: Restaurants, shops and the Zeitz MOCAA contemporary art museum. Safe and walkable at night.
Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden: On the mountain's eastern slopes, with a canopy walkway and summer sunset concerts.
Bo-Kaap: The historic Cape Malay quarter with its painted houses. Visit respectfully — people live there.
Stellenbosch & Franschhoek winelands: 45-60 minutes inland. The Franschhoek wine tram is a hop-on hop-off way to taste without driving.

Where to stay in Cape Town

V&A Waterfront: Safest and most convenient for first-timers, with restaurants and the Robben Island ferry on site. Priced accordingly.
Camps Bay: Beachfront with mountain backdrop. Beautiful and expensive; you will drive everywhere else.
City Bowl (Gardens, Tamboerskloof): Our usual pick — central, good restaurants, close to the cableway, decent value.
Sea Point & Green Point: The promenade, good-value apartments and an easy walk to the Waterfront.
Constantia: Leafy, quiet and near the older wine estates. Good for families and slower trips.

Getting around and airport transfers

Hire a car. Cape Town's attractions are spread across a peninsula and public transport does not connect them usefully for visitors. Driving is on the left.
Ride-hailing apps work well in the city and are the standard way to get around at night.
The MyCiTi bus covers the airport, Waterfront and Sea Point corridors and is fine for those routes specifically.
Cape Town International (CPT) is about 20-30 minutes from the city outside rush hour.
Avoid using minibus taxis unless you know the system — they are for commuters, not visitors.

Choosing a hotel

December and January rates can be triple those in May. Moving to March or April usually improves both price and weather-wind balance.
Serviced apartments in Sea Point and Green Point offer far more space than hotels for the money.
Confirm secure parking if you hire a car — it is standard, but check.
Check whether the property has backup power. Load-shedding has improved but a hotel with an inverter or generator removes the risk entirely.

Tours and activities worth booking

A guided peninsula day tour saves you the driving and the parking, and the guides add real context at Cape Point and Boulders.
A township tour with an operator that employs and pays local guides is worth doing, and worth researching first — quality and ethics vary.
The Franschhoek wine tram removes the drink-driving problem entirely and is the easiest winelands day.
Shark cage diving and whale watching run from Gansbaai and Hermanus, about two hours away — a long day, best booked as a package with transfers.

Visa information for South Africa

Nigerian passport holders need a visa for South Africa

South Africa requires a visitor's visa for Nigerian passport holders, applied for in advance through the South African High Commission's appointment provider in Nigeria. Appointment availability and processing times fluctuate significantly, so this application should be started early.

You will normally need confirmed flights and accommodation, bank statements, proof of employment or business, and a yellow fever certificate if you are arriving from or transiting a yellow-fever-risk country. Travellers under 18 face additional documentation requirements around parental consent and birth certificates — check these carefully if children are travelling.

Families, couples and solo travellers

First-time visitors: Six to seven nights: two city days, one peninsula day, one winelands day, one Robben Island morning, plus a weather buffer for the mountain.
Families: Constantia or Sea Point. Boulders Beach, the Two Oceans Aquarium and Kirstenbosch work well across ages.
Couples: City Bowl or Camps Bay with two nights in Franschhoek. Sunset from Signal Hill is free and better than most paid options.
Safari combinations: Cape Town pairs naturally with a Kruger-area safari or the Garden Route. Allow at least four extra nights for either.

Tips for first-time visitors to Cape Town

Cape Town is a city with real inequality and property crime. Do not walk with your phone out, avoid quiet streets after dark, and use ride-hailing at night. Tourist areas are well policed.
Never leave anything visible in a parked car, anywhere.
Water is safe to drink from the tap.
Tipping is expected: 10-15% in restaurants, and car guards in parking areas are usually given small change.
The sun is intense even on cool days — the UV index is high most of the year.
Check the wind forecast daily; it determines whether the mountain and the ferries operate.

Common mistakes to avoid

Planning Table Mountain for your last day. Go up the first clear morning you get.
Trying to do the peninsula and the winelands on the same day.
Visiting in December without booking accommodation and restaurants months ahead.
Relying on public transport between attractions.
Leaving the South African visa application until the final six weeks.

What things typically cost

Mid-range hotel, per night: Roughly R1,800-R3,500, with a steep December premium.
Car hire, per day: About R450-R800 for a small car including basic insurance.
Restaurant meal: R180-R400 per person at good independent restaurants — excellent value by international standards.
Table Mountain cableway: A return ticket runs a few hundred rand, cheaper for an early-bird slot.

Is Cape Town safe for tourists?

The main tourist areas are well policed and visited safely by large numbers of people every year. The realistic risk is opportunistic property crime. Use ride-hailing at night, keep valuables out of sight, and take local advice about which areas to avoid.

How many days do I need?

Six to seven nights for the city, peninsula and winelands with a weather buffer. Add more for the Garden Route or a safari.

When is the best time to visit?

March and April, in our experience — warm, drier, calmer winds and better prices than midsummer.

Do I need a car?

Strongly recommended. Ride-hailing covers the city, but the peninsula and winelands are far easier with your own vehicle.
